Susan Petersen started making baby moccasins in 2009 after becoming frustrated by the lack of well-designed baby shoes. Using her second child, Gus, as a mocc-tester, and a bag of scrap leather she picked up at a yard sale, she began experimenting with designs. Working at her kitchen table, on a shoestring budget, Susan persisted through some disastrous attempts until she had created a pair of moccasins that not only looked adorable on Gus’ chubby little feet, but stayed on his feet as well.
Since then the moccasins have gone through about six design changes. Each change has perfected the look and the fit of the soft-soled shoe. The moccasins you purchase today are durable, well designed, and most importantly: stay on your child’s foot.
Money was tight at the time Susan started and in order to earn money to start her business she got resourceful. Her brother owns a window installation business and in the summer of 2009 she convinced him to let her keep the old windows that he was removing from the houses. She spent a whole summer banging the glass out of the windows because they were encased in aluminum frames. At the end of the summer she took the aluminum window frames to the scrap yard and recycled them to get money. She made $200 dollars and with that literal sweat equity, she started her business.
Each pair of moccasins, whether being shipped to the rich and famous (or at least their kids), or shipped across town, are made with care, perfection and a love for the little feet they are intended for.
Shandell's Review
I wouldn't let him wear them out or on a regular basis because they are for baby #3 and they don't fit properly, but goodness they do look cute on him! Makes me almost wish I had ordered his size instead! I didn't know how thick the sole would be so I didn't figure my active kiddo could comfortably wear them out of the house, but these things don't disappoint! He'd easily be able to walk around comfortably in our yard or at the park. What a treat! A cute shoe that is precious on babies but ALSO works well for toddlers and preschoolers is a rare and exciting find. Their sizes go from 1-10 so they are just under what Malakai (4 1/2 years) could wear.
These moccasins are precious on boys and girls. The color palette is inspirational, I could choose a pair and base a room off of them (like the new coral ones)! Some colors are discontinued to make room for new ones, but they always carry a large selection. Check out their brand new camo ones above, adorable!
As I mentioned the leather material is exquisite, and they craftsmanship is incredible. They are durable and beautiful. I picked "Swimmin' with the Sharks" because we are fond of grey, they are gender neutral and go with everything, plus I thought it was timely choice with Susan having just appeared on ABC's Shark Tank. The color is exactly what I expected from having only viewed them on their website. It is deep and rich and the material is soft yet strong. I couldn't recommend these more highly!
