last year

at this time, I got pregnant with Malakai...and wouldn't know it for 4 more weeks.

I had been gone for a week in Sacramento, CA working 2 college fairs a day. I came home exhausted and missing my husband so badly I cried tears of joy when I saw him at the airport.

He brought me home to a huge sign welcoming me back, a gorgeous flower arrangement on the mantel, and a dozen tiny candles all over our bedroom.

I still can't think of a more loving and romantic way to have conceived our child. And while it took 4 months of trying, and my heart broke each month that the test was negative...God knew what he was doing and Malakai arrived right on time.

squeals

Here's a video of Kai squealing that Ben got earlier this evening

and since the little guy was so happy we decided it would be a good idea to do bath time. Also...he had some serious fuzz hiding in his adorable neck rolls.

I discovered that his hair is now long enough to do a mini-fauxhawk when wet and ran to get the camera.

weekend wrap up

My Friday DID in fact get better, a lot better actually. After Henry got picked up Malakai and I got ready and went over to see our friends Aimee and Titus. Aimee treated me to her homemade tomato soup while both of our boys napped. It was so great to have some adult conversation in the middle of the day. Some how we got on the topic of labor and delivery (she had a c-section at 36 weeks, so she never felt contractions) and I went through my whole labor story. It was interesting having another mom be curious about labor. It made me really appreciate our experience!

Afterwards I picked up daddy from work and we had a quick dinner at home and then went back to Aimee's to watch Titus for a couple hours while Aimee and her husband Josh went out for her birthday dinner. Titus is 13 months old and about 4 pounds heavier than Malakai! He's such a sweet little guy and it was fun to watch Ben play with a toddler.

Saturday was a lazy day at home. Ben went out and picked up donuts while Kai and I slept in for a bit. We literally did nothing but enjoy each others' company all day.

Sunday we decided to go to first service at church so we could have some time to run errands before going out to my parents' place. For the third week in a row Malakai got too noisy so we had to go sit in the cafe and watch the message on the tv. At least they have that option available.

At my parents' place someone scoops of Malakai as soon as we arrive. My sister grabbed him first and his MeMa was soon to follow. At one point I actually got to take a nap while Kai napped and my mom watched him so he wouldn't wake me up, it was so very nice.

I love how comfortable Malakai is at my parents' place and with my side of the family. We don't see Ben's family nearly as often. I'd like us to hang out with them more before we leave him to be babysat so that they can become more familiar with his temperament and Kai will feel comfortable without us around.

My favorite part of the weekend was that Malakai started squealing, like super loud happy baby noises that you could hear all over the whole house. We have yet to capture it on video but I'll be posting it as soon as it happens! In the meantime, here's Henry & Malakai playing...or more accurately, Malakai being attacked by Henry ;)

and I lived to blog about it

I've had a doozy of a day and it's not even noon yet. Let me share my misfortune with you, yes? Misery loves company, so feel free to share your crap days with me if you find the time :p

A little background- Ben and I only have one car. I may have mentioned that before. Mommy mush-brain makes it impossible for me to remember things like that anymore. Anyway, so if I need to do anything that involves leaving the house during the day I have to take him to work at 7am. This morning we did that for the first time so I could have a SAHM date with a girl friend of mine this afternoon.

I got halfway back home and realized that I didn't have the housekey on my key chain and Ben had made a point of the fact that he wasn't bringing his keys since I was driving. It just so happened I had taken off the house key to put in my pocket when Kai and I went for a walk about a week ago and said key got buried underneath the mail sitting on the dining room table.

I checked the keyring at two stoplights before calling Ben. I knew he couldn't do anything since he didn't have a key, but I needed him to tell me what I should do. He said to call my dad.

My dad is also our landlord. He also works graveyard and lives 40 minutes away. I called his cell phone in hopes that he was in town still after getting off of work. No such luck, he was cozy in his pj's about to go to bed. ugh. I thought about the options- I could drive out there and have Henry's mom bring him to work and then pick him up when I got back to town, or I could watch Henry at their house and then go get the key after. My dad insisted on just coming back into town and saving us the trip. Saved by G'Pa.

So for the next 45 minutes I sat in the car with Malakai- who was THANKFULLY fast asleep and waited. I prayed that my dad would get there before Henry's dad dropped him off. How embarrassing to have to explain that Henry could wait with us in the car too? No thanks. I was never more happy to see my dad speeding up our road. He of course complained, and I made a peace offering of xbox live (they live in rural area sans high speed internet and G'Pa LOVES video games) but he wanted to get back to sleep.

Five minutes later Henry got dropped off and fell asleep immediately. I thought that my day could only get better. I went to feed Malakai in bed after changing him and when I picked him up discovered his very first up the back diaper BLOWOUT. Ew.

About a year ago when I was first pregnant I explained blow-outs to my childish husband who wouldn't stop snickering. I got him to agree to change each and every blow out upon Kai's arrival since he thought they were so humorous. He even shook on it. Unfortunately, daddy was 7 miles away. just.my.luck.

The poo soaked through his pj's onto the WHITE bedsheets, and when I had picked him up it was on my sleeve...which is actually my sister's sleeve. SHHH don't tell! I also had to change him on the floor in the living room because Henry was sleeping and I didn't want to wake him with Kai's coos in the nursery.

When I headed to the laundry room to start the wash I then discovered annoyance # 3 of the day...our utility sink where we bathe Malakai had been dripping. It usually does, but when we were bathing the boy I had cranked the faucet to the side and it was dripping onto the floor and my craft shelf. The paint on the shelf is artfully cracked (maybe I'll leave it in the rain to make the rest of it look antique-y) and the floor was soaked. freakin' great.

I sopped up as much as I could on my still empty stomach between attending to my fussing little guy.

Then Henry woke up and Malakai was hungry again at the same time. So I sat criss-cross-applesauce on the nursery floor and nursed Kai while rocking Henry in his carseat.

Then...the worst thing of all happened. The baby swing died. And there are no batteries in our house. I found myself swinging it with my foot to lull Henry to sleep and feeding Kai again. It didn't work, so I had to walk my son to sleep and place him in the carseat while I walked Henry to sleep.

Finally- peace and quiet. This day will get better right?

Baby Steals! a linky post

So I just bought the Aden + Anais muslin swaddling wraps I've been wanting for ages. Malakai has ONE swaddling blanket right now and it's the tattered one from the hospital. The other "receiving" blankets we had were never long enough to keep him securely swaddled. At one point we gave up swaddling because we just thought that he didn't like it, but once we discovered we just needed a larger blanket, we were all sleeping so much better!

Anyway, a mama friend of mine that I met through The Bumpmessage boards posted about the sale at Baby Steals on her facebook. I had heard of baby steals before, but never really checked it out. I'm so glad that curiousity led me to check it out today! The blankets were almost 50% off!

Usually Ben and I discuss all purchases before making them, but there was only one design that wasn't sold out so I wanted to snag them up quickly. I emailed him afterwards and apologized. He didn't really mind, even though we don't have much money.

I know Malakai doesn't NEED these, but it will keep me from having to do laundry every time he spits up on his current blanket and it will be easier to swaddle him with these larger ones. Plus, once we stop swaddling in the next couple months they are good for a lot of other uses and durable through frequent washing...do I sound like a commercial? The only reason I know so much is that the mama I do daycare for sent one of theirs for us to keep here when Henry is over and we tried it out. I've been dying to get them ever since but they are usually so expensive.

Anyway, I got the jungle print which isn't my favorite but I don't care about that so much.

And I'm pretty sure that is the most links I've ever put in one post...or perhaps the entirety of my blog. Maybe some of you will be able to benefit from this sale before it's completely over from my passing it along. Let me know if you do!

weekend wrap up

Friday night and Saturday morning were wonderful- we did NOTHING.

Saturday afternoon was our first date...it lasted all of 90 minutes including drive time. Ben and I are notorious for not spending a lot of time at restaurants no matter what the occasion. When it's just the two of us, we don't seem to linger very long. It was still fantastic to get some time to be out of the house together without worrying about the little guy.

After the restaurant we went to Bi-Mart and picked up wiper blades for the car. thrilling huh? We were in my parents' little town so there wasn't much else we could have done to entertain ourselves, so we headed back. I walked in the door to find my mom and Malakai doing this-

Apparently he wouldn't let her hold him and feed him at the same time. Whatever works I guess!

I'm so glad we are getting ourselves and Kai comfortable with being babysat. The little guy I watch during the week has some pretty bad separation/stranger anxiety and is just now starting to get used to me, but won't go down for a nap without screaming for at least 30 minutes in my arms. I don't think I could stand to leave Malakai if he had that issue, so we decided to start getting him used to others caring for him.

We spent the rest of the afternoon & evening at my parents' house and didn't get home til almost 11pm...and we didn't get the little guy down for the evening til almost midnight. I don't think it mattered much since he's been fighting sleep at night lately anyway- waking every 2-4 hours to eat.

Sunday at church he woke up after worship and wouldn't quiet down so we went into the cafe to watch the message on tv. I'm excited and nervous for him to be able to go to the church nursery during service. They don't take little ones until 4 months. I'm worried about him being with other babies and getting sick. He's just getting over this nasty cold after 3 weeks and I don't want to deal with that or something worse. For his sake more than mine of course.

We went to Goodwill after church to check out onsies. He needs more long-sleeved ones for this fall weather. There wasn't much so we went to the walmart (usually we prefer target, but it was closer) and I grabbed some white long-sleeved onsies and some zippered sleep n' plays. At the self-check the sleep n' plays rang up as "restricted" and the lazy worker just said "must be a recall" took them from me, and started to walk off. I said "well, there's a lot of them back there." In hopes she'd actually investigate it for me and she said "I'll let them know and kept walking". I was so irritated and we needed to get Kai home to eat and nap so we just left with our onsies. I highly doubt there's a recall and will be heading to Target when I get the chance to get my stinkin' sleep n' plays darn it!

Right now I'm in the middle of a nap war. I've tried the crib and the swing and he wouldn't sleep for more than 40 minutes. This is NOT normal for him...he usually naps for 2-3 hours. I'm letting him wiggle it out on his baby gym thinger in hopes that he'll be tired enough to take a longer nap pretty soon here.

::sigh::
wish me luck!

first date

tomorrow will be our first date.

just the two of us.

we haven't gone out to eat since our wedding anniversary on July 7th, just 9 days before Kai was born.

wish us luck in leaving our little guy with his mema for a few hours. He's in excellent hands, I'm just sure I'll miss him so much!

3 months today

Here are the cliche's "I seriously can't believe how big he's getting!" & "it's going by way too fast"...both are too true.

Took these just a couple hours ago in the backyard and his room...

sniffle-bug

That has been Malakai's nickname for over a week now. He's so congested, my poor little boy! He just started sounding better today and I'm hoping it disappears as quickly as it came on.

Since he wasn't feeling well and many of our family have been feeling worse (potential swine flu!) the boy and I stayed around the house to be safe. And by "around the house" I mean I hadn't stepped foot outside of my home since coming back from my humidifier run on Friday the 2nd until venturing out to go grocery shopping on Saturday the 10th! The funny thing is I hadn't really realized it had been over a week. It did feel good to finally get out of the house though!

During our homebound week sniffle-bug and I had a little photo shoot. I couldn't resist taking pictures of him in an outfit his great-aunt purchased since he was in such a good mood. It was the first time I could get him to really smile and look at the camera. This boy of mine has me wrapped around his little finger so tight!

our turn

the sickness that has been "going around" has hit our household. I don't have the full blown symptoms that Kai and Ben have, and am hoping it stays that way so I can take care of my boys.

so many people are dealing with this there's no way of knowing where it came from- not that it would help any. We are holed up in our house to keep from spreading it and getting anything else that's floating around while our immune systems are down. My mom is sick and it may be the flu, everyone at Ben's work is dealing with a hefty cold or flu bug, and some friends of ours have a sick little one as well. It's all over the place!

We had a lot of plans and cancelled them all. Thursday and Friday mornings I was supposed to watch Henry but of course didn't want to get him sick, so we had to cancel. His mama totally understood, but I still felt bad leaving them without a day care provider for two mornings. Friday I was supposed to go to lunch with my cousin- cancelled, and dinner with the in-laws, cancelled.

Today is college football game day and we usually watch with family or friends and we were going to go to my parents' place-cancelled. Tomorrow we were going to go to church as usual- cancelled.

As if I don't spend enough time in this house already! I realized on Thursday that I hadn't stepped outside of my house once since we came home from a get together on Monday night. cabin-fever.

Since the boys are sick and daddy stayed home from work on Thursday afternoon and all day Friday I actually was able to get out of the house for a teeny bit. Thursday I went and picked up a few essentials at the grocery store. Last night I went to Target and got a humidifier for Malakai and Theraflu for Ben.

I'm hoping this is the worst of it and we won't have to battle any more illnesses for the rest of the "season"...but that seems pretty unlikely.

my sleepy bean- I'm having him sleep in his swing as much as possible (so much for getting him used to the crib)since being upright significantly reduces his congestion. poor little bug.

I know the H1N1 vaccine comes out soon and adults with infants are second in line to get it after pregnant women. Is anyone else getting it? Our pedi recommended that we get it, but doesn't think it's necessary for Malakai. What have you been told?
