Desmond's 1st haircut

I'm still behind on some things but I couldn't wait to skip over those for a moment and post some shots of Desmond's first haircut which just happened yesterday.

Here is our boy before his much needed haircut. I think he's precious, but admit that it was about time to get the hair out of his eyes.

 I must say, I do NOT recommend cutting a 10 month old's hair yourself. It was so difficult and in my opinion a bit of a disaster with all his wiggling around. He got pretty fussy and I had to call it quits...

I feel like he's nearly sporting a "Dumb and Dumber" style here...yikes. It was the best I could do with all the moving he insisted on doing. My heart stopped a couple time when he swung his face or a hand toward the scissors. 

Today after nap I let him play with some bath toys and did my best to correct some of the funky spots. It looks better and he is looking much too old!

Last weekend was packed full during just about every waking hour. Friday night was my brother's High School graduation and party.

Saturday I went in for a much needed hair cut and did a little shoe shopping. I have no sandals that fit me except plain plastic flipflops, which don't really feel church/work appropriate. After lunch I headed out to a baby shower for Ben's cousin. When I got home we did a bit more shoe shopping and I finally found something to fit my expanding feet (they aren't swelling, but spreading!) and had Five Guys for dinner. Then I set to work on cutting Malakai's hair.

The first two times I cut Kai's hair I used scissors. He moved a lot and the 2nd time it took me about 3 days to finish. This time I wanted to worry less about scissors around his head and I also wanted to give him a shorter cut for the warm weather. I cut Ben's hair so we already had clippers. I pretended to use them on Ben first to show Kai that they aren't scary. He also had a popsicle...so he was a pretty happy camper.

When he started to move too much Ben got out the ipod and played him a few clips of Elmo but every time it would end he would wiggle more. It was Toy Story 3 on Netflix instant that saved us, he was totally zoned out and I finished up the edges.

Here we are afterward with our hair looking much more polished. Although mine is pulled back, you can see a better photo of my new cut here. It's still long but 5 inches shorter than it used to be, I also get it texturized/thinned out to make it more manageable. I usually also get my bangs cut but I'm attempting to grow them out. It had been a year since my last haircut, I'm so bad about that!

On Sunday morning Ben + I barely recognized Malakai with his big boy haircut. He seemed to grow up before our eyes...stop it kiddo! The 3 of us went to church together for the first time in about 8 months. Usually one of us has to be there significantly earlier than the other, but the stars aligned and we went in together!

I had been up since 3:45am so I ate lunch and passed out for a much needed nap. Later we headed to Mima, G'Pa + Aunt Nans' to visit. Cody was gone on a camping trip with his friends to celebrate graduation. We ate + visited and Kai got some horseplay in with G'Pa. Then just like that Monday rolled around.

first haircut

I was so, so, so nervous about cutting Malakai's hair. For weeks now I've been contemplating it, but would back down out of fear. A big part of my apprehension was that I'd be doing the job myself. I've cut Ben's hair exclusively for almost 5 years, so I have experience, but not with super fine curly baby hair. And not with MY son's precious golden locks.

It seems silly to put such importance on this little event, but it's definitely more about what it means than the literal act.

He's growing up. I don't like it much.

I mean...look at this transformation...

From sweet baby to little boy in just twenty minutes. He now looks even more like his daddy, which I never thought could be possible. 

I literally couldn't throw any of his curls on the ground as I cut them off I set them down on the table. I felt neurotic doing it, but I just couldn't bear to not keep them all. So now they're all in a little baggie. 

A keepsake to tuck into a pocket of his baby book. A reminder, just in case those curls never come back. 

photo friday: yesterday

Yesterday was the only day this week I took new photos with an actual camera. I've been using my cell phone for the most part because I didn't know where the memory card for the camera was. Turns out it was right where I left it...

Anyway, yesterday I also stayed home from working daycare because I woke up feeling light headed, nauseated, dizzy...not pregnant! ha! I was worried I had the flu or something and I also had a nasty headache so I rested {as much as I could with my very energetic and mobile 10 month old}.

I tried working on a photo friday post about Ben + I, but got too nostalgic and kept reading through old emails and looking through old photos so that one will have to wait for next week I think.

So, here are yesterday's photos.

It was so nice out and I felt bad for keeping Malakai cooped up so we went out into the backyard for a little while to soak up some sun. He pretty much stuck to one spot on the big quilt.

He loves to tap things on different surfaces so when there's not wood or tile flooring around mama improvises with this toybox or a book.

Lately he's been putting his arms up in the air and waving his hand around. I'm trying to teach him to do it when I say "sooo big!" but he just grins at me. 

He has been waving hello and goodbye by holding his arm up then opening and closing his hand. Daddy finally witnessed this for the first time last night. It's so super cute!

Malakai's been pulling himself up and subsequently climbing everything for about 6 weeks now. He's recently discovered the dining room table and chairs. I'm constantly chasing him down before he gets a death grip on them. It wouldn't be so bad except the floor is hard tile and he tends to fall a lot. Plus he's working on  his 5th tooth and keeps biting the metal!

Here's a video of Kai squealing that Ben got earlier this evening



and since the little guy was so happy we decided it would be a good idea to do bath time. Also...he had some serious fuzz hiding in his adorable neck rolls.

I discovered that his hair is now long enough to do a mini-fauxhawk when wet and ran to get the camera.
